SSC Stenographer Grade C & D Vacancy 2026 – Apply Online

The Staff Selection Commission (SSC) has officially announced one of the most awaited government job exams of the year — the Stenographer Grade C and D Examination 2026. If you have a dream of working in a central government office and you know shorthand writing, this could be your golden opportunity.

What Is This Exam About?

SSC is a government body that recruits people for various jobs across India. Through this particular exam, SSC will hire stenographers — people who take notes quickly using a special writing system called shorthand — for different ministries, departments, and government organizations all over the country.

There are two types of posts being offered:

  • Stenographer Grade C — This is a Group B post (Non-Gazetted), which means it is a slightly higher-level position.
  • Stenographer Grade D — This is a Group C post, a starting-level government job.

Both are respectable, permanent central government jobs that come with salary, benefits, and job security.

How Many Jobs Are Available?

SSC has announced approximately 731 vacancies for this year. However, the final number may change as more government departments report their requirements. The updated and confirmed vacancy details will be posted on the official SSC website at https://ssc.gov.in.

Important Dates You Must Remember

Missing a deadline can cost you the opportunity entirely. Here are the key dates:

  • Application Start Date: 24 April 2026
  • Last Date to Apply: 15 May 2026 (by 11 PM)
  • Last Date for Fee Payment: 16 May 2026 (by 11 PM)
  • Form Correction Window: 20 to 21 May 2026
  • Computer Based Exam: July to August 2026

Make sure you apply well before the deadline. The SSC website often slows down in the last few days due to heavy traffic from lakhs of applicants.

Who Can Apply? Eligibility Conditions

Age Limit (As on 1 August 2026)

  • For Stenographer Grade C: You must be between 18 and 30 years old. That means you should have been born between 2 August 1996 and 1 August 2008.
  • For Stenographer Grade D: You must be between 18 and 27 years old. Born between 2 August 1999 and 1 August 2008.

Age relaxation is available for SC/ST (5 years), OBC (3 years), PwBD candidates (10 years), and Ex-servicemen, among others.

Educational Qualification

The minimum education required is a pass in Class 12 (Higher Secondary) or an equivalent exam from any recognized board or university. You must have completed this by 1 August 2026. Even candidates awaiting their results can apply, but their result must be declared before the cut-off date.

Stenography Skills Are a Must

Here is the key condition that separates this exam from others — you must have skills in stenography. If you have not learned shorthand, you will not be able to clear the Skill Test stage of this exam.

Application Fee

The application fee is just ₹100. However, the following groups do not need to pay any fee:

  • Women candidates
  • SC and ST candidates
  • Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD)
  • Ex-servicemen

Payment can only be made online through UPI, net banking, or debit cards (Visa, Mastercard, Maestro, RuPay).

SSC Stenographer Exam Pattern

The selection process has two stages:

Stage 1: Computer Based Examination (CBE)

This is an objective-type multiple-choice exam with three sections:

SectionSubjectQuestionsMarksTime
Part IGeneral Intelligence & Reasoning505030 min
Part IIGeneral Awareness505030 min
Part IIIEnglish Language & Comprehension10010060 min

Total duration is 2 hours. There is a negative marking of 0.25 marks for every wrong answer, so think before you tick.

The paper will be available in both Hindi and English, except for the English Language section.

Stage 2: Skill Test in Stenography

Candidates shortlisted after the CBE will be called for a Stenography Skill Test. This test checks your speed in shorthand:

  • Grade C posts: Dictation at 100 words per minute, to be transcribed on a computer in 40 minutes (English) or 55 minutes (Hindi).
  • Grade D posts: Dictation at 80 words per minute, to be transcribed in 50 minutes (English) or 65 minutes (Hindi).

The Skill Test is mandatory but qualifying in nature — it does not add to your score, but you must pass it to be considered for final selection.

What Subjects Should You Study?

  • General Intelligence & Reasoning: Puzzles, analogies, number series, coding-decoding, visual reasoning, pattern recognition.
  • General Awareness: Current events, Indian history, geography, science, economy, Indian constitution, sports.
  • English Language: Grammar, vocabulary, comprehension, sentence correction, synonyms, antonyms.

Note: Visually impaired candidates (40% or more visual disability) will not be given questions involving maps, graphs, or diagrams.

Reservations and Special Categories

SSC follows all government reservation rules. Seats are reserved for SC, ST, OBC, EWS, Ex-servicemen, and Persons with Benchmark Disabilities. For BRO (Border Roads Organization) posts of Steno Grade D, only male candidates are eligible. BRO posts also require passing a Physical Efficiency Test — a one-mile run within 10 minutes — along with medical standards.

Women candidates are actively encouraged to apply for all other posts, as the government aims for a gender-balanced workforce.

How to Apply?

All applications must be submitted online only at https://ssc.gov.in or through the mSSC mobile app (available on Google Play Store). You will first need to create a One-Time Registration (OTR) if you have not done so already. After OTR, you can log in and fill the application form.

A live photograph is captured during the online application — so you do not need a pre-existing photo. Make sure you are in good lighting with a plain background, looking straight at the camera without spectacles or a cap.

Made a mistake in your form? Do not worry. SSC offers a correction window from 20 to 21 May 2026. You can correct your details up to two times during this window. However, it comes with a fee — ₹200 for the first correction and ₹500 for the second. Plan carefully and avoid needing corrections.

Where Will the Exam Be Held?

Candidates from the North Eastern Region (covering Manipur, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh, and Tripura) can choose centers like Imphal, Guwahati, Shillong, Aizawl, Kohima, Agartala, Churachandpur, Ukhrul, Jorhat, and Dimapur.

You must choose three centers in order of preference. No changes will be allowed later.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q1. What is the last date to apply for SSC Stenographer 2026?

The last date to submit your online application is 15 May 2026 by 11:00 PM. The last date to pay the fee is 16 May 2026 by 11:00 PM.

Q2. Can a Class 12 appearing student apply for this exam?

Yes, you can apply if your Class 12 result is yet to be declared, but your result must be officially announced on or before 1 August 2026. If your result comes after that date, your application will not be accepted.

Q3. Is stenography knowledge mandatory to apply?

Yes, absolutely. Only those candidates who have skills in stenography (shorthand) are eligible to apply. Even if you clear the written exam, you will need to pass the Skill Test in stenography. Without shorthand knowledge, you cannot qualify.

Q4. I am an OBC candidate. Do I get any fee waiver?

No, OBC candidates are not exempted from the fee. Only women, SC/ST, PwBD, and Ex-servicemen candidates are exempted. OBC candidates need to pay the ₹100 application fee.

Q5. Can I apply for both Grade C and Grade D posts?

Yes! You can apply for Stenographer Grade C only, Grade D only, or both at the same time by selecting the appropriate option in the application form. Applying for both gives you a better chance of selection.

Q6. What happens if I make a mistake in my application form?

SSC provides a correction window from 20 to 21 May 2026. You can make corrections up to two times during this period. The first correction costs ₹200 and the second costs ₹500. After this window closes, no changes will be allowed under any circumstances.

Q7. Is there negative marking in the written exam?

Yes. For every wrong answer, 0.25 marks will be deducted. There is no negative marking for questions left unanswered. So it is better to skip a question if you are not sure rather than guessing randomly.

Q8. Does the Skill Test have marks that count towards final selection?

No. The Skill Test is qualifying in nature only. It does not carry any marks for the final merit list. Your final rank is decided purely on the basis of your score in the Computer Based Examination. However, you must pass the Skill Test to be considered for appointment.
